Tips on using the wiki
From DIT Experimental Gaming Group
How do I create a new page?
There are several ways. The easiest is to:
- Edit an existing page
- Add a link with the title of your proposed page (ie type [[My New Page]] )
- Save the current page. Your new link is highlighted red to indicate that content needs to be added
- Follow the new link, your new page ('My New Page') will automatically be created as a result
- It's a good idea to view the source of an existing page that you like the look of (click on the Edit or View Source link) to figure out how to achieve something
How do I base the new page on a template?
Use the 'substitute' command to base a page on a template; firstly create a new page, then enter the text {{subst:MyTemplate}}
There is currently only a template for Game Design documents, so for example to create a new game design document..
- create a new document as described above
- enter the text {{subst:Game} and save
- edit the page again to fill in content
Basic Formatting
- To add a new section use: =Heading=. Use more ='s to indent the level.
- To add an unordered list, put # before each entry in the list.
- To put a link to another site, use [http://www.dmc.dit.ie/hugh/crydit/ grangegorman VR].
- To put a link to a youtube video, use <youtube>5LgZOLrFFLQ</youtube>
How do I add an image to the wiki?
1. first edit the page.
2a. Type [[Image:myimage.jpg]]
2b. Alternatively, click the picture frame icon on the toolbar (highlighted)
3. Save the page. You will see a link to the image highlighted red.
4. The image still needs to be uploaded. Click the new link to upload the image
5. Browse for the file, then upload it.
The image will now appear in place on the page
When should we directly amend a page and when should we use the associated discussion page?
For any given page, we want to end up with a coherent page that reads fluently and that represents the sum of the groups perspectives.
Additions, minor edits and alternatives can be amended directly. People can optionally initial their contributions if it adds clarity.
Where a conflict arises, people can switch to the associated discussion page to explore the subject and reach a concensus. The page can then be amended with the conclusions.
When should we split a large document into smaller documents?
We should be guided by practicality. A few large pages are easier to browse than a lot of small pages. Once people find a page too large for whatever reason, the topic can be split into smaller pages.
